Finding the Perfect Mattress
Posted 5 years ago

If you're tossing and turning all night and feel tired all day, the likely culprit is your mattress. Especially if your mattress is more than eight years old, it may be sagging and not giving you the proper support that you need. There are so many brands and styles of mattresses out there that finding a new mattress may seem like a daunting task. We're here to help and below we list the top factors that you should look for when buying a mattress and our top recommendations!

Top 5 Factors When Buying a Mattress
1. Comfort - This is the single, most important factor when choosing a mattress. Since you spend one-third of your life sleeping, your mattress has to suit your needs. Take time to lie on different types of mattresses so that you can experience each one. Make sure you lay on the mattress in the position that you normally sleep at night - on your back, on your side or on your stomach.
2. Support - A good mattress should provide relief to pressure points and provide adequate support. Mattresses are either firm, plush or somewhere in between these two. When looking for support, consider how you sleep at night. If you sleep on your back, choose a medium-to-firm mattress. If you sleep on your side, choose a soft-to-medium mattress and lastly if you sleep on your stomach, look for a firm mattress.
3. Motion Transfer - Another key to a good mattress is eliminating or lowering the chance for motion transfer. The best mattresses at absorbing movement are Memory Foam and Hybrid with Innerspring mattresses. If you choose an innerspring mattress, look for one that has pocketed coil technology.
4. Durability - A mattress is a large purchase and like any large purchase, you want it to last. Take time to find out what each mattress is made out of. On average, good mattresses should last at least 8 years. Latex mattresses last the longest with an estimated lifespan of 12 years, while pillow-top mattresses have the lowest lifespan at 7 years. Memory Foam, Hybrid and Innerspring all have an estimated lifespan of 10 years.
5. Edge Support - If you often sit on the edge of your bed, look for a mattress with built-in edge support. Mattresses with all-steel double row coil support along the edges or ones that have individually wrapped coil support systems with foam encasements work well. Both provide edge support so you don't feel like you're going to roll off!

Mattress Recommendations
Innerspring

-These are the most common mattresses and typically they are the lowest in price. These mattresses have springs or coils that provide a familiar bounce and deliver support. They are ideal for any sleep position, but are especially suited to back sleepers. Pillow Top

-These provide an extra soft sleep surface and are great for side sleepers. You'll find the extra layer of softness cradles your body and eases pain. Quality Pillow Top mattresses disperse your weight for maximum comfort and these are as soft as memory foam mattresses, but less expensive. Our Mt. Dana Mattress is the perfect combination of comfort and support. It's available in both a Plush (soft) and Firm. Hybrid

-If you can't make up your mind between spring mattresses and memory foam, a Hybrid Mattress is a good option for you. They are made with a combination of different foams, coils and other materials taking the best qualities and blending them together. Our Ashley Furniture 12" Chime Mattress is a great example of a hybrid mattress. Shop it here - http://www.gomajik.com/products?search-term=12%22+Chime.

Gel Infused Memory Foam

-A Gel Mattress pulls heat from your body, helping to regulate the temperature as you sleep. If you typically feel hot at night and/or experience pain often, we recommend this type of mattress. You'll notice deep pressure relief from the foam which contours to your body. There's also no need to flip or rotate this mattress since it maintains its shape.
