Grab a Book for National Read a Book Day
Posted 5 years ago

Today is National Read a Book Day! This national holiday is simple, grab a book and start reading! Don't keep it to yourself, share the experience and read aloud to children, grandparents or even to pets!

When was the last time you read a book? If you're one of the countless people who's reading habits center around tweets, Facebook updates or online articles, you may be missing out! Reading is known to have a significant number of benefits. You'll find a few of these benefits below.

1. Knowledge
You never know what information you'll find in a good, and the more knowledge the better. Information in books may help you tackle challenges that you're currently facing or ones that may come up. The phrase "Knowledge is Power" really is true and reading can help increase your power.

2. Expansive Vocabulary
With more knowledge, comes more words. Reading allows you to gain exposure to words that may not be in your everyday vocabulary. You can then take these new words and put them into your everyday phrases. A great help in any profession is being well-spoken and articulate. Reading helps build your vocabulary, allowing you to feel confident when talking to peers or those above you.

3. Stress Reduction
A well-written store can make you forget what's currently going on in your life by transporting you to another world. Even if you have a lot of stress at work, in your personal relationships or other issues you're faced with, you can always lose yourself in a good book. Reading lets tension fade away, allowing you to relax.

4. Memory Improvement
If you think back to the last book you read, you can probably think of a few of the main characters or the plot of what happened. When you read a book, these are the things you have to remember.  Without even knowing it, while reading you know and remember the main character and their ambitions and history, along with all the plots and twists in the story. The brain does amazing things when reading, like remembering all these bits and pieces of the characters and plots. Each new memory also strengthens existing ones, so reading helps aid in short-term memory recall.

5. Improved Concentration and Focus
Each day we multi-task so much. Our mind and attention are pulled in so many different directions throughout the day. When you're reading a book, all your attention is focused on the story. Your mind is fully concentrating on the information in the book and what is happening. Information is absorbed so much quicker when you are concentrating on one item. Reading for just 15 to 20 minutes before work each day can really help with your focus and concentration once you get to the office.

Now that you've read about a few of the benefits, it's time to get reading! Below are some links of great recommendations for a good read! Happy reading!
